A Washington resident died on Sunday after contracting H5N1 bird flu from exposure to infected dairy cattle in Yakima County, marking the first human death from this virus in the U.S. this season. The patient had underlying health conditions and was hospitalized with severe illness before passing away. This is only the third recorded bird flu-related death in U.S. history, following two cases in 2024 and 2025.
The Yakima Health District confirmed that a total of three residents in Yakima County have been infected by bird flu since early October; however, this recent death is the first to be fatal. Two other individuals with milder symptoms were also exposed at dairies housing infected cattle but did not require hospitalization.
Cases of avian influenza have surged among livestock and poultry across the country, with nearly 2.6 million birds affected in the last 30 days alone. Despite this increase, national egg prices remain stable. Public health officials stress that while risks are low for the general public, people who work closely with infected animals or environments are at higher risk of contracting the virus.
