African lenders have established a $5 billion energy bank aimed at funding oil and gas projects across the continent. This initiative comes in response to rising global energy prices that have pressured public finances, pushing several countries to develop new fields or build refineries domestically. The African Export-Import Bank and the African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation estimate that Africa needs approximately $200 billion annually for energy investments. With major Western lenders reducing their support for fossil fuel projects, the new bank seeks to fill this funding gap by supporting a range of activities from exploration and production to refining and distribution. The "Africa Energy Bank" was launched to help African governments secure their own energy futures amid increasing debt costs and infrastructure spending needs.
