A 44-year-old man from Cairns died after being crushed under a boulder while fossicking near Laura in southern Cape York Peninsula, approximately 300 kilometres northwest of Cairns. Emergency services were alerted around 8:30 am local time and paramedics attended the scene but could not save him; his body was flown to Cairns by helicopter for further investigation. The closest road access is via Endeavour Battlecamp Road near the Laura River, an area historically significant due to its role in the Palmer River goldfields boom of 1873. One companion contacted Laura General Store owner Harold Tavner while waiting for rescue services and sought information on creating a landing pad for the helicopter. A report will be prepared for the coroner to determine the exact cause of death.
