An aging NASA telescope, known as the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, is on track to plunge back to Earth this week after a failed rescue attempt left it spiraling toward re-entry. The U.S. Space Force predicts it will crash down on or around Friday, November 4, 2026. Most of the 1.5-ton telescope will burn up in the atmosphere, but some denser parts and mirror sections could survive reentry, potentially landing in ocean waters near swaths of Africa, Australia, India, Southeast Asia, and Central and South America. Launched on November 20, 2004, the Swift Observatory spent two decades searching for gamma-ray bursts and supernovas before intense solar activity accelerated its fall.
