Latvia's armed forces reported a brief intrusion into the country's airspace near the borders with Belarus and Russia on November 1, 2026, asking residents in the area to stay inside for their safety during the incident. About 30 minutes later, the military stated that the unidentified object had left Latvian airspace and the threat was over. This intrusion adds to concerns about Ukrainian military drones straying into NATO countries' airspace near Russia and Belarus. Earlier this year, a similar incident in Latvia contributed to a government collapse. Moscow has accused Ukraine of using NATO airspace as cover for attacks, while Kyiv claims that some of its drones have been steered off course by Russian signal jamming.
NATO countries generally blame Russia for the incidents, for having ignited the war by invading its neighbour nearly five years ago.
