On November 1, 2026, over 40,000 volunteers built 108 Buddhist stupas along a 12 km stretch of the Mau Chhu River near Gelephu in Bhutan, marking the beginning of the construction for the future Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC). This event is part of Bhutan’s plan to create a global economic hub centered around spirituality. The 108 chortens, or stupas of enlightenment, were enshrined with Buddhist relics primarily from India but also from other countries like Malaysia and Thailand. King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk envisions the GMC as a significant tourism attraction to drive economic growth in Bhutan.
