Australian surfer risked his life to save fellow surfer who had been attacked by a shark

A 56-year-old surfer named Mel Ismail was seriously injured by a shark while surfing at Glenfield Beach near Geraldton, Western Australia, on Monday morning around 9:45 AM. The attack occurred approximately 40 meters offshore, and authorities have since closed the beach to ensure public safety. Ismail suffered severe leg injuries and had to undergo surgery after being rushed to the hospital in a serious but stable condition; it is reported that he lost his foot due to the attack.

Local media identified the injured man as Mel Ismail, who works for Western Australia's Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES). Authorities have sent the damaged surfboard for testing to identify the species of shark involved. No shark sightings had been reported in the area within the previous 30 days according to the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.

The attack has raised concerns among locals, with community members being advised to exercise caution around the beach.
