On October 27, 2026, Javits Frimpong, a 15-year-old boy from Ghana who had lived in New York City with his father for about a year, was fatally shot while walking to school near Crotona Park in the Bronx. He was chased by three males wearing all black and believed to be between 16 and 18 years old; they fled after firing multiple shots around 9:25 am. Frimpong was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Frimpong had been severely bullied at school for months, which his father reported to authorities on several occasions without resolution. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that President Donald Trump agreed to grant a visa to Frimpong's mother so she could travel from Ghana to see her son one last time.
The incident has sparked outrage and mourning in the community; thousands gathered for vigils in support of the victim and his family, highlighting concerns over school bullying and immigrant safety.
