On November 1, 2024, a concrete canopy at the Novi Sad Railway station in Serbia collapsed, killing 16 people, including two six-year-old children. The reconstruction of this railway station was part of a major state-funded project backed by China’s Belt and Road Initiative to upgrade the railway line between Belgrade and Budapest for high-speed rail services. The tragedy led to widespread protests due to allegations of corruption and government negligence in the construction, ultimately resulting in the end of 14 years of rule by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), led by Aleksandar Vučić.
