On October 30, 1971, Aberdeen was rocked by an explosion followed by a fire at the Jumbo Floating Restaurant, which had not yet opened. The blaze killed 13 people and injured at least 42 others. Within five minutes, the four-decked floating restaurant was engulfed in flames, leaving it reduced to a charred hulk. Despite this tragic start, the Jumbo Floating Restaurant was later rebuilt and reopened in 1976, continuing its operation until 2022 when it closed again due to financial difficulties.
