As of October 31, 2026, France deployed 70,000 police officers to contain expected protests driven by anger over living costs and public services. French President Emmanuel Macron had earlier warned that the protests could turn "risky." In Germany, more than 160,000 people across about 30 cities are expected to join demonstrations inspired by similar youth-led movements in France and Italy. The protests began with a student strike in Paris’ suburbs over teacher shortages and deteriorating conditions and have since spread across Europe, with concerns that violence could overshadow the demonstrators' demands for better education and lower living costs.
Protests in Germany are led by a group dubbed “GenZ regelt!”, which translates to “Gen Z has got this!”.
The German protest movement’s complaints include the high cost of living, poorly maintained schools, government spending cuts and, more broadly, politicians taking decisions with little regard for the younger generation.
Since then, French authorities have sought to clamp down on violent protests, but last weekend saw further demonstrations across the country, including intermittent clashes with the police.
