On October 30, 2026, the expected pace-maker Defiantly, an Irish import trained by Joseph O’Brien, was scratched from the Melbourne Cup after failing a veterinary inspection due to sensitivity in its hind foot. The horse, purchased specifically for the race by Australian Bloodstock and part-owned by media personalities Yvonne Sampson and Chris O’Keefe, had been set to run in Tuesday’s 3200m race at Flemington. Dozens of owners were reportedly devastated by this last-minute news. With Defiantly out, another O’Brien runner Kizlyar will now make the starting 24 horses for the race.
