Story summary

Reigning NHL MVP Nikita Kucherov has informed the Tampa Bay Lightning that he will not re-sign with them and requested a trade, according to reports by SportsNet’s Elliotte Friedman. Kucherov is in the final year of an eight-year, $76 million contract signed in 2018, during which he helped the team win two Stanley Cup titles and led the NHL in scoring three times. Despite being the Lightning’s all-time scoring leader, Kucherov is reportedly having a low-scoring season with four goals in 12 games this year, although he averages over a point per game for the tenth straight year. The Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois and Kucherov's agent Dan Milstein have declined to comment on the reports. This move comes amid an NHL season filled with similar shocking developments involving other star players requesting trades or facing suspensions for refusing to play unless traded.

Why this leaning score

This article does not take a side on a contested political question, so it has no leaning score. That is an answer rather than a gap: a match report or a rescue can be warmly or critically written without being left or right, and scoring it anyway is how approval of a subject gets recorded as a political position.
