As of October 30, 2026, Novaya Gazeta, Russia's leading independent newspaper founded in 1993, has announced it will shut down due to increasing pressure from the Russian authorities. The editor-in-chief, Sergei Sokolov, stated that the newspaper was "killed" by state repression following years of harassment and legal actions targeting its journalists who have reported critically on Russia's war in Ukraine and other issues. In recent months, authorities searched Sokolov’s home and detained journalist Oleg Roldugin earlier this year. The closure marks a significant blow to press freedom in Russia, with the newspaper being one of the few outlets openly critical of the Kremlin's policies.
Novaya Gazeta was founded in 1993, with former Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev using the money from his Nobel Peace Prize to help set it up.
In the over 30 years since, it has become a staple of independent Russian journalism, constantly at odds with authorities and frequently weathering censorship and harassment.
