Constable Jeff Smith, a Belleville, Ont., police officer who was seriously injured while thwarting a hate attack on the Sons of Jacob Synagogue on September 20, has been released from hospital over a month later and is now recovering at home. The shooting occurred during Yom Kippur celebrations when Smith and his colleague Constable Michael McCurdy confronted gunman Sean Ward, who was attempting to enter the synagogue with intent to commit violence. Ward died the next day after being shot himself. Smith suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including in the head, and required extensive medical treatment, including several surgeries. Belleville’s police chief stated that had Smith not intervened, Ward likely would have carried out a larger-scale attack on the congregation inside. The synagogue community has hailed Smith as a hero for preventing potential mass casualties.
