On October 29, 2026, nine orangutans were released back into the Batu Nyambu forest in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, after being rescued from wildfires at an oil palm plantation in Ketapang earlier that summer. The group included four mothers and their young, some of whom had been severely underweight or malnourished and required weeks of care at a rehabilitation center before the release. Since early August 2026, at least 51 orangutans have been rescued from burning forests in West Kalimantan according to Indonesia's forestry ministry, while monitoring group Nusantara Atlas estimates that fires consumed more than 1.9 million hectares of land across Indonesia in the first nine months of 2026. The release site was chosen for its undisturbed habitat and abundant food sources to aid the orangutans' recovery and survival amid growing concerns over their endangered status.
