James Talarico, a Democratic candidate for the Texas Senate, received $3,000 in donations from Nouman Ali Khan, a prominent Muslim leader and founder of the Bayyinah Institute. This donation came shortly before early voting began on October 19, 2026. Khan is known for controversial statements, including justifying spousal abuse under certain conditions, which has damaged his reputation among some Muslims. In 2017, several women accused Khan of grooming female fans into sham marriages to facilitate sexual relationships and then pressuring them to stay silent about the incidents. These accusations were detailed in a BuzzFeed News report that cited findings from a panel of four Muslim scholars who concluded that when women complained about his conduct, Khan would "apologize and attempts to buy their silence or threatens them." The donation to Talarico has raised concerns about the candidate's alignment with controversial figures.
The most recent donation arrived Oct. 19, the day early voting opened — and one day after Talarico worked the room courting Muslim voters at a halal barbecue spot in Irving.
