Joanna Wietrzyk, a 24-year-old Australian endurance athlete who holds a world record in her sport, admitted to putting others at risk by continuing to race during the Hyrox event in Beijing in September after soiling herself. In an interview with BBC, she apologized for her decision and acknowledged that it was wrong not to consider those around her. The incident led to widespread sharing of images showing faecal matter on parts of Wietrzyk's body online, causing a significant backlash against her. Although she initially felt the social media reaction was too harsh, she expressed regret for her actions during the race. Hyrox has since introduced new rules giving race directors the power to remove athletes if their vomit, urine, or faeces pose a risk of contamination.
