Story summary

A naked Russian mercenary, likely a foreign recruit, was recently captured on video pleading for help by holding up a sign that read "Please help me!" as a Ukrainian drone flew over him in Ukraine. The man is one of nearly 50,000 mercenaries recruited from more than 150 countries and territories since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022. Speculation suggests the individual could be part of a contingent facing dire circumstances on the battlefield. Russia has been relying heavily on such foreign fighters for its military operations, often assigning them to high-risk missions. The video highlights the extreme conditions these mercenaries face and underscores the international nature of the conflict.

Why this leaning score
This article does not take a side on a contested political question, so it has no leaning score. That is an answer rather than a gap: a match report or a rescue can be warmly or critically written without being left or right, and scoring it anyway is how approval of a subject gets recorded as a political position.
