South Carolina Representative Jim Clyburn is visiting Michigan this weekend to rally Democrats around Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for Senate. This comes as Michigan Democrats are concerned that Republican candidate Mike Rogers could reduce their support among Black voters. Clyburn, a top House Democrat, previously supported Rep. Haley Stevens in the primary and campaigned with her at its end. The race has been further complicated by Stevens' fiancé voting for Rogers due to Democratic divisions over Israel; Stevens continues to offer El-Sayed tepid support. Clyburn's visit aims to project unity within the party ahead of Election Day.
Democrats have a closer in Michigan’s Senate race: South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn.
Michigan Democrats are trying to project unity and turn out Black voters ahead of Election Day amid concerns among some party members that Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers could erode the party’s edge among Black voters.
Clyburn had backed Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., in the contentious Senate primary and campaigned with her in its final days.
Stevens is still maintaining her somewhat lukewarm support for El-Sayed.
