A Michigan grocery worker identified as Walt Z confronted an Instagram prankster who staged a fake Apple Pay theft while he was restocking shelves. The encounter went viral after the worker expressed frustration over his difficult job and family responsibilities, telling the pranksters they were not funny and that he had four children at home waiting for him. The incident sparked widespread outrage online, leading to a GoFundMe fundraiser initiated by supporters which has raised over $400,000 as of October 30, 2026. Walt Z expressed gratitude but was reportedly overwhelmed by the amount of support he received.
The encounter quickly turned tense as the employee realised he was being filmed and objected to the stunt.
The video, initially shared on Instagram by an account operating under the handle @thea.ctiveworld, also known as Three Of A Kind, sparked widespread criticism.
The worker also explained that he was supposed to have finished work an hour earlier and needed to wake up at 5 am the following morning to visit 10 more stores.
The fundraiser had crossed $100,000 as the story gained attention, with donations continuing to arrive from people moved by the employee's account of working long hours while trying to support his family.
