William “Stone” Romberg, a 31-year-old father of two and beach hospitality manager in Florida’s panhandle, died on Sunday when he drowned while trying to save a seagull from his fishing line. According to reports by The Independent World and Fox News, Romberg was fishing near an inlet in the Panama City Beach area with friends when the bird got tangled in his lure. As he swam out to rescue it, strong currents dragged him further into the sea, where he drowned. His body was found tangled in the fishing line after his friends lost sight of him and attempted CPR but could not revive him.
Romberg’s death has prompted an outpouring of support from social media tributes and a GoFundMe campaign that had raised over $300,000 as of Thursday to help cover funeral expenses for his family. The Bay County Sheriff's Office confirmed the tragic incident to local outlet WJHG.
