Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, stated on October 29 that the United States has proposed holding presidential elections in Venezuela for 2027. This timeline aligns with her previous support for such an election. During her first substantive remarks since returning to Venezuela over the weekend, Machado emphasized the US State Department's clear stance regarding upcoming electoral steps, including the prompt appointment of a new National Electoral Council and adherence to constitutional deadlines. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also backed this 2027 vote proposal. Machado, who was barred from running in the 2024 election but whose proxy won according to opposition tallies, returned to Venezuela on Sunday after several failed attempts earlier in the year. She is seen as one of the country's most popular opposition figures.
Machado thanked Rubio and Trump for their role in the ouster of Maduro.
