Opposition lawmakers in Albania disrupted a parliament session on October 29, 2026, by setting off smoke flares and blocking access to the podium during a vote on central bank legislation. This action followed weeks of violent anti-government protests led by students demanding Prime Minister Edi Rama's resignation over perceived government corruption, lack of jobs, and poor education standards. Opposition leader Sali Berisha accused ruling lawmakers of being criminals who deserve force used against them rather than the protesters. The unrest has seen demonstrators set fires to government buildings and smash shop windows across Tirana since mid-October. Four opposition MPs were expelled from the session, adding to ongoing tensions between the Democratic Party and Socialist Party members over alleged police brutality during protests.
By bringing photographs of injured demonstrators into parliament, Democratic Party MPs sought to draw attention to their accusations against the security forces.
Opposition lawmakers accuse police of using excessive force against people taking part in the protests, although the allegations are not independently established by the images presented.
