On October 29, 2026, a special tribunal in Bangladesh sentenced Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Joint General Secretary of the Awami League, to death for killing six people during the July Uprising protests in 2024. The three-member tribunal led by Justice Nozrul Islam Chowdhury convicted Hanif and ordered his hanging. Additionally, three other Awami League leaders from Kushtia district received identical sentences for their roles in quelling the protests that ultimately led to the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024. All four accused are currently absconding, and the tribunal ordered the confiscation of half their property. This marks Hanif as the 23rd Awami League leader sentenced to death since Sheikh Hasina's government was overthrown.
"He will be hanged until death,” Mr. Chowdhury ruled after convicting him of killing six people in western Kushtia district during the 2024 violent student-led street protests.
Ms. Hasina and her party leaders have called the tribunal a “kangaroo court” while international rights groups like Amnesty International, U.S.-based Human Rights Watch and prominent jurists questioned the fairness of the trials.
