Chancellor John Healey pledged a reduction in Britain's welfare bill before the next general election, despite criticism for lacking specific details on how this would be achieved. In interviews with BBC Radio 4’s Today programme and other outlets, Healey promised to tackle soaring welfare costs but faced questions about his vague approach. The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) forecasts welfare spending to rise to £353 billion by the end of the year, increasing to £431 billion by 2031/32. Prime Minister Andy Burnham insists that the government is working "flat out" to cut these costs.
