On October 28, 2026, the United Nations General Assembly voted to condemn the U.S. embargo on Cuba for the 34th consecutive year, but support fell to its lowest level since 1995 with 130 countries in favor, 25 abstentions, and 17 against, including the U.S. and Israel. Western nations like Germany, Italy, and Latvia abstained for the first time, reflecting increased pressure from Washington's campaign against Cuba. The day before, a shouting match erupted between U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla during a UN assembly meeting over photos of Fidel Castro wearing two Rolexes. A Cuban diplomat, Richard Tur de la Concepción, was accused by the U.S. delegation of assaulting an American diplomat and will be expelled from the U.S. within 24 hours.
The vote was 130-17, with 25 abstentions – a notable decrease in support from last year, when more than 160 nations supported the measure and only 12 abstained.
For the first time in 34 years, Western countries like Germany, Italy and Latvia were among those that refrained from voting.
