On October 28, 2026, a minor assailant armed with two knives attacked a gendarmerie officer guarding the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade, Serbia. The attacker was shot dead by the officer in self-defense after shouting "Allahu Akbar." The officer sustained a minor facial wound but did not require hospitalization.
Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic stated that authorities had been monitoring the assailant due to his support for the Islamic State group, evidenced by an IS flag displayed on his Instagram account. The incident was classified as a terrorist attack, prompting Serbia to raise its terrorism threat level to "red alert," indicating heightened security measures at key locations.
The attacker is believed to be from Sabac, a town in western Serbia. No embassy personnel were injured during the nighttime attack, and the Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed it as an attempted terrorist act under investigation.
