A $10,000 purchase named Barrengarry was initially nominated for the prestigious Golden Eagle, a $10 million race in Australia. However, trainer Joe Ible and his connections opted to withdraw the horse from the Golden Eagle due to the strength of its competition, despite an ideal barrier draw. Instead, they chose to run Barrengarry in the Sydney Gold Cup, which carries a purse of $750,000. The decision was made after considering that the four-year-old horse, having earned $226,600, might not realistically have a chance against the stronger field in the Golden Eagle race. Ible, who has never had a Group 1 runner and manages around 25 horses, emphasized the appeal of the Sydney Gold Cup as an alternative target for Barrengarry.
