Afghan nationals recently deported from Pakistan are facing increased harassment and arbitrary detentions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) since the military-backed Shehbaz Sharif government imposed governor’s rule and a state of emergency in the province. According to TOLO News, Afghan returnees report frequent midnight raids on homes and demands for bribes from law enforcement officials in exchange for their release. Mohammad Rahman, an Afghan deportee, stated that his family had moved to KP during former Prime Minister Imran Khan's tenure but now lives in fear due to the deteriorating situation. Sohail Khan, another returnee, noted that authorities conduct raids on residential properties at night and target individuals arbitrarily. The emergency measures have made daily life increasingly difficult for Afghan refugees who are now hesitant to leave their homes for fear of arrest or extortion.
