On October 26, 2026, U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman ruled that the Trump administration illegally fired Maurene Comey, daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, from her position as an Assistant United States Attorney in July 2025. The judge ordered Comey's retroactive reinstatement and backpay effective from the date of her termination through December 20, 2025, when she began a new job. Furman concluded that the firing violated Comey’s Fifth Amendment due process rights and the constitutional separation of powers. Comey had worked on high-profile cases including those against Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, as well as Sean "Diddy" Combs. She filed suit in September 2025, alleging her dismissal was politically motivated because of her father's opposition to President Trump or her perceived political affiliation.
Judge Jesse M. Furman delivered the ruling on Monday.
Comey had spent a decade as an assistant U.S. attorney before her removal in July 2025.
The judge found she was illegally fired despite working on some of the nation's highest-profile cases and consistently receiving “the highest accolades from supervisors and peers alike.”
