A Swiss court on October 26 found a former Belarusian security officer, Yuri Harauski, guilty of abducting businessman Anatoly Krasovsky, an opponent of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko. Harauski had confessed in a 2019 interview with Deutsche Welle about his involvement in the 1999 abduction of three people who were opponents of Lukashenko; two others kidnapped that day were Yuri Zakharenko and Krasovsky, all of whom were later killed. The court acquitted Harauski over the kidnapping of Zakharenko but imposed a reduced sentence of two years on probation because of his cooperation and comprehensive confession. Rights groups view this as the first conviction anywhere in the world of a member of Belarus' security forces for such an act, despite earlier acquittals.
