On October 22, 2026, in Bafwasende town within Tshopo province in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a nurse was killed and another health worker severely injured after they were attacked while responding to an Ebola alert. This incident is part of a series of attacks on health workers that are hampering efforts to control the outbreak, which has already led to more than 9,800 cases and over 4,700 deaths, making it the deadliest Ebola outbreak in DRC’s history since May 2026. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and regional director Dr. Mohamed Yakub Janabi condemned the attack, emphasizing that healthcare must be protected.
