On October 25, 2026, US President Donald Trump held a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, where he invoked the memory of 9/11 to urge voters to oppose Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. Trump compared El-Sayed to the attackers responsible for the September 11 attacks and accused Democrats of allowing "violent anti-American terrorists" into the United States. If elected, El-Sayed would become the first Muslim in the US Senate. The race is one of the most competitive in the country as it will help decide control of the chamber ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Republican candidate Mike Rogers has alleged without evidence that El-Sayed has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, which El-Sayed denies, calling such allegations "shameful."
Trump has sought to paint him as an anti-American Muslim radical and on Sunday he took the rhetoric to a new level, likening El-Sayed to the attackers who took over United Flight 93 during the September 11 attacks in 2001.
