A 39-year-old woman was sexually assaulted at knifepoint in Central Park near East 67th Street and Fifth Avenue around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday night. The attacker, wearing a black sweatshirt and pants with a black backpack, fled the scene after threatening her with a knife and dragging her into a wooded area of the park. She was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
This attack is part of a concerning trend; it marks the fifth sexual assault in Central Park this year. Nearby residents expressed fear over the safety of walking alone at night in the park, especially after hearing about similar incidents. The NYPD has launched an investigation but no arrests have been made yet, and they continue to search for the suspect.
City Council Speaker Julie Menin condemned the attack, expressing outrage and offering support to the survivor while emphasizing the need for safety throughout New York City.
