Sally Brockway criticizes Sussex's portrayal as a top global travel destination and a favored spot for celebrities and downsizers from London, describing it instead as "deathly dull." In her critique published in Mail Online on October 25, 2026, she specifically targets Haywards Heath, noting that its sole attraction is the frequent train services to London. Brockway argues against romanticized views of places like Brighton, Chichester, and other Sussex towns often highlighted as desirable living locations due to their cleaner air and relatively cheaper housing but dismisses them for lacking cultural vibrancy compared to London. Her piece suggests that while these areas may offer respite from urban life, they fall short in providing an engaging lifestyle beyond basic amenities.

I moved to Eastbourne last summer and, having grown up here and explored every inch of Sussex, here’s my brutally honest guide to the desirable, the charming and the deeply disappointing spots.
It’s like that Hinge date that looks perfect on paper - great teeth, impressive credentials and a healthy bank balance, but when you finally meet… there’s just no chemistry, and you realise you’d have more fun doing your tax return.
There’s a dearth of decent places to eat in Chichester itself; unless you like chains, there’s no nightlife to speak of and public transport is unreliable.
