Amanda Nascimento, a 29-year-old Brazilian nurse, died on October 18 from an alleged severe allergic reaction to shrimp during her honeymoon in Leiria, Portugal. The newlyweds had traveled to Europe after marrying on October 10 and visited the Vatican before their stay in Leiria. At a local restaurant, Amanda consumed seafood believing it was fish due to a miscommunication with staff. Two hours later, she experienced an allergic reaction and was rushed to a hospital in Leiria but could not receive adequate care. She had to be transferred approximately 49 miles north to Coimbra University Hospital for better treatment but suffered cardiac arrest en route and died before reaching the facility. Amanda’s brother-in-law confirmed her severe shrimp allergy, highlighting the fatal consequences of the misunderstanding at the restaurant.
