On October 23, two gunmen opened fire on a funeral procession at Saint George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Hamoud village, Karak governorate, Jordan, killing nine people and injuring nearly 40 others. The attackers arrived in a car, fired for several minutes during daylight hours before fleeing the scene. Security forces were deployed immediately but have not made any arrests as of October 24. The attack is highly unusual in Jordan, which has been relatively stable despite recent tensions with Iran since US and Israeli strikes against it earlier this year. Government spokesperson Mohammad Momani suggested the attackers might subscribe to extremist ideologies that label those who reject strict interpretations of Islam as apostates or nonbelievers. King Abdullah II vowed a harsh response to the attack, calling for an "iron fist" approach in dealing with perpetrators.
