Tundu Lissu, the jailed opposition leader of Tanzania’s main opposition party Chadema, plans to begin a hunger strike on Monday, October 26, 2026, to protest prison authorities' refusal to allow court-ordered private consultations with his lawyers. His lawyer, Rugemeleza Nshala, disclosed this information during a press conference in Dar es Salaam on Saturday, October 24, 2026. Lissu, who survived being shot 16 times in an assassination attempt in 2017, faces charges of treason and could receive the death penalty if convicted. He has been detained for over 18 months, with his final judgment scheduled for November 6. Nshala warned that Lissu is prepared to stop taking necessary medication during the hunger strike but remains committed to fighting for legal rights.
Mr. Lissu was arrested April 9, 2025, after addressing a rally calling for electoral reforms ahead of that year's general election.
Presidential candidates from Tanzania's two main Opposition parties were barred from contesting the October 2025 election, which triggered protests and deadly violence.
