As of October 24, seven people were killed and 40 injured when gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in Hamoud, Karak governorate, southern Jordan. The attack occurred around noon local time on Friday, with eyewitnesses reporting intense gunfire that lasted several minutes. Footage from state television showed two gunmen carrying pistols and a third man with what appeared to be an automatic rifle approaching the church before firing shots and fleeing.
The exact number of assailants remains unclear; some witnesses reported seeing up to four gunmen. Jordanian authorities described the attack as an act of extremist terrorism but provided few additional details regarding the perpetrators or their motivations. King Abdullah II and Prime Minister Jafar Hassan both condemned the incident, with King Abdullah stating that Jordan will confront such acts "with the harshest penalties."
Survivors recounted scenes of chaos and fear inside the church, with some individuals hiding while others fled for safety. One survivor reported seeing two masked gunmen pointing weapons at people inside and firing shots into the building.
The attack has drawn international condemnation, including a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs expressing solidarity with Jordan in combating terrorism.
