On October 23, 2026, a gunman killed one person and wounded several others in Trappes and nearby La Verrière, about 30 km west of Paris. The suspect fired from a vehicle with what appeared to be a military-grade weapon for less than 15 minutes at three separate locations. Among the injured was a 12-year-old girl. French authorities identified the victim as Pengo Bossio Wangi, a 26-year-old amateur mixed martial arts fighter from Aubervilliers, who was not publicly named by officials until October 24.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described it as a "terrorist crime" with possible racist motives. President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack as a "racist terror attack," stating that victims were targeted due to their skin color or perceived religion. A suspect, identified as Kévin T., was arrested shortly after the shooting, and the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office took over the investigation.
