Ethan Katzberg, Olympic champion in hammer throw, suffered an unexpected defeat at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship when he failed to record a mark and was eliminated after the first two rounds. German competitor Merlin Hummel won the event with a throw of 81.46 metres, despite being second to Katzberg at the 2025 world championships in Tokyo. Katzberg, from Nanaimo, B.C., had been ranked as the top hammer thrower globally prior to this competition. The Ultimate Championship does not award medals but instead offers a prize pool of $10 million, with each event winner earning $150,000. Additionally, Canada's quartet narrowly missed out on a medal in the mixed 4x100-metre relay by finishing fourth, while Christopher Morales Williams placed fifth in his men’s 400-metre semifinal.
