On October 24, German police detained a suspect after a large fire broke out at Adolf Hitler's mountain retreat, known as the Eagle's Nest, in Bavaria. The building was found "completely ablaze" by firefighters who arrived around 9:50 PM local time on Friday, October 23. About 200 emergency personnel were deployed to tackle the blaze at an altitude of 1,834 meters (6,000 feet), making it difficult due to its remote location. No injuries were reported and investigations are ongoing to determine if the fire was arson; German media reports suggest this possibility after a motorcyclist was arrested on suspicion of involvement. The Eagle's Nest, built between 1937 and 1938, was used by high-ranking Nazi officials and survived World War II largely undamaged, becoming a popular tourist site since then.
The Eagle's Nest forms part of the toxic legacy of Hitler's Third Reich, which was responsible for the deaths of millions of Jews along with Roma, LGBTQ people and Communists in the Holocaust.
