Robert Gordon’s College (RGC), a prestigious private school in Scotland with fees of up to £21,000 per year, is suing Aberdeen Endowments Trust (AET) after the trust proposed redirecting funds towards state schools and charities. AET currently provides free places for more than 30 pupils from families earning less than £80,000 annually through bursaries. Historically, RGC has received the majority of AET’s funding, but the new proposals would reduce its share to 70 percent over the next five years and a minimum of 49 percent thereafter. The school argues that it offers "transformational bursaries" enabling talented pupils from less affluent backgrounds to attend RGC. Notable alumni include former UK Cabinet minister Michael Gove, Aberdeen oil tycoon Sir Ian Wood (deceased), former Scotland football captain Martin Buchan, and immunologist Ian Frazer.
Aberdeen Endowments Trust (AET) applied to redirect cash earmarked for Robert Gordon’s College (RGC) towards state schools and charities in September.
