The Trump administration intends to push for new labels on seafood sold at grocery stores, aiming to inform consumers about product origins, according to two U.S. officials who spoke with CBS News. The proposed "U.S. Caught Seafood" label by the Food and Drug Administration would not be mandatory. This initiative is part of President Trump's economic pitch during his visit to Florida on October 23, where he will campaign for Senate candidate Ashley Moody and gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds in Fort Myers before returning to Mar-a-Lago. About 80% of seafood consumed in the U.S. in 2023 was imported, while domestic fishing contributed $5.1 billion compared to imports worth $25 billion. Additionally, the administration plans to offer $5 billion in loans to support the fishing industry's equipment purchases.
