In October 2026, Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch declared that the fatal shooting of 1-year-old Kohen Wiley by a police officer in Senatobia, Mississippi, on June 14, was “justified.” The incident occurred after officers responded to a shoplifting call at a Walmart and confronted Vellesiya Wiley and her friend. According to body camera footage released later, the car containing Kohen and his mother allegedly fled from officers, leading one officer to open fire. The bullet killed Kohen and injured another occupant in the vehicle. Despite this ruling, Kohen’s family, represented by civil rights lawyer Ben Crump, continues to contest the decision, arguing that the use of force was excessive and unjustified. Protests demanding justice for Kohen have been ongoing since the shooting.
