Peres Jepchirchir, a Kenyan Olympic and world marathon champion, has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) over a positive drug test for EPO. The AIU announced on X that an out-of-competition sample collected in Kenya before her Sydney Marathon victory returned an adverse analytical finding for EPO, a banned substance. Jepchirchir won gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and is also a former world record holder in the half marathon. Her agent declined to comment further when contacted by The Associated Press. Provisional suspensions are typically imposed while cases undergo investigation and can be lifted if the athlete proves their innocence or dropped entirely. Kenya, which has a history of doping cases among its distance runners, was recently awarded the 2029 World Athletics Championships, marking it as the first African country to host this event.
