US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg on October 21 to discuss new ideas for ending the war in Ukraine. The meeting marked the ninth time that Witkoff has personally met with Putin and coincided with Russia's release of a retired US school teacher who had been held captive.
Prior to this, Witkoff conducted "constructive" talks in Oslo on October 20 with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders. Despite these diplomatic efforts, there remains skepticism about the likelihood of resolving the conflict anytime soon.
Russia has also announced plans for trilateral peace talks involving Russia, Ukraine, and the US to be held in November in the United Arab Emirates, as part of intensified diplomatic efforts by President Donald Trump's administration to end Europe's bloodiest conflict since World War II. However, details regarding the exact date and location are still being finalized, with both sides expressing varying timelines for when discussions can commence.
These developments come amid ongoing concerns over potential backing away from Ukraine by Washington and delays in delivering military aid to Kyiv, raising questions about the sincerity of peace efforts and necessary concessions from all parties involved. Ukrainian officials emphasize the need for strong Western guarantees alongside direct military support, while Moscow prioritizes bringing Ukraine under Russian control or influence.
