A significant and tragic fire broke out on October 18 at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta, approximately 200 kilometers southeast of Edmonton, during a grenade launcher exercise involving live ammunition. High winds caused the blaze to rapidly spread across the base and into the surrounding Municipal District of Wainwright No. 61. The incident led to four fatalities and injured 39 soldiers; as of October 23, 27 remained hospitalized.
Brigadier-General Vanessa Hanrahan, commander of the Canadian Forces Military Police Group, confirmed that a change in wind direction exacerbated the fire's intensity, preventing firefighters from directly combating it due to its location within the "permanent danger area" of the grenade range. Prime Minister Mark Carney and Premier Danielle Smith expressed their condolences and solidarity with the affected military personnel.
Emergency responders are managing the situation without issuing evacuation orders for the nearby town of Wainwright, which has around 7,000 residents. The Department of National Defence is closely monitoring developments and providing updates as more information becomes available.
