A monumental painting titled *Iris* by French impressionist artist Claude Monet sold for 50 million euros ($56 million) at an auction in Paris on Thursday, setting a record for the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction in France. The oil-on-canvas work, measuring 1.60 metres in height and 1.80 metres in width, had been housed privately within the Paris mansion of the billionaire Schlumberger family since it was acquired by Jeanne Schlumberger (1889–1983). Sotheby's, which organized the auction, initially estimated *Iris*'s value at between 22 million and 30 million euros. Monet created this work during his later years, adding to its historical significance. Additionally, three other Monet paintings were featured in the same auction, including a piece known as *saule pleureur* (weeping willow), which was estimated to fetch between 9 million and 12 million euros.
